Expeditions
Roraima 2007
Through our collaboration with investigators at the Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas, we carried out research in the quartzite Tepuy Mountains of Venezuela. Getting to these caves involved a flight to Caracas, then a flight to Cuidad Bolivar. We stayed over night in a hut, then took another flight to Ste. Elena – during which time Hazel’s luggage and half of the camping gear went missing, only to show up 4 hours later with a piece of cardboard with Ste. Elena scribbled on it (what amounts to a lost luggage tag in Venezuela). From here we had an hour drive to San Francisco, another night in a rustic hotel, followed by a helicopter flight to the Roraima summit. On top we were met by the other members of our expedition team who had hiked up for three days prior to our arrival (and they NEVER let us forget about it). On top we spent 3 days working in the cave and exploring the tepuy. To view a photostream of our trip, click [HERE]. Stretch took a video of the helicopter dropping us off and heading back to the tepuy for Cruz and Arturo:
